Advances in technology have affected almost every area of our daily lives. This has especially been the case in the last few decades, and few industries have remained unchanged. Construction is no exception: it has been massively impacted by new technologies and techniques. As a result, buildings are bigger, stronger and safer than before. Every aspect of building has been improved and refined, including roofing construction and installation.

In the past the focus was mainly on strength and durability. Although these factors are still important in the construction of modern roofs, other issues like energy efficiency and environmental impact are increasingly being considered as well.

One rather strange development has been the appearance of green roofs in some places. Also called “sod roofs,” these are an ancient type of roofing installation that involves growing real grass or other plants on the roof of a building. This ancient technique is being given a modern spin by being combined with hi-tech building practices and is used to create a highly efficient and environmentally friendly roofing solution.

One of the more famous examples of a modern green roof is the one on top of the Chicago City Hall. These roofs are said to keep the building cool and reduce rainwater run-off. They also help to reduce the “heat island” effect common in most urban areas.

It is unlikely that local roofing installation companies will start offering grass as an alternative to tiles or steel any time soon, but it will be interesting to see how ancient practices and modern technology are woven together to make even better roofs in the future.
